About the show

Stax Records is responsible for music that helped define a city, an era, and a genre. Operating out of an old movie theater in South Memphis, the label mixed blues, funk, and gospel into the "Memphis Sound," giving the city a distinct R&B identity. The rich instrumentation added new layers to soul music during the 1960s and 1970s as it became influential across genres. With artists like Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, The Dramatics, The Staples Singers, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, Carla Thomas, and David Porter on its roster, Stax Records housed essential soul acts from Memphis and beyond. Amid tragedy and mounting financial struggles, the label remained additive to culture beyond the production of music. If you've seen Wattstax, you know what we mean. If not, you'll find out. Join us on July 12 as we look back on the label's role in not only R&B's progression, but one of the most important, if divisive, cities in America. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. \*\*\* The R&B Club is a cultural gathering founded in 2018 that discusses the influence of R&B music. In other words, think of it as a musical book club-style meetup. Follow us on social media at @therandbclubdc for more information.
